On the Streets: London, Elsewhere and Elsewhen
Since I decided to be a photographer in 1984, I've made photographs in the Streets simply for myself, wherever I happened to be. However, in July of 1997, I married and moved to London. It was a new world to me, familiar yet simultaneously stranger than I could have known. Using the camera to try to come to grips with my new country, I devoted myself to shooting on the street. London is a city made for walking, smaller and more compact than any place I'd lived before. By doing errands on foot, camera always with me, I became familiar with much of it. In 2001 I was invited to join in-public, the international Street Photographers' collective, and truly began to feel at home. London has an easy proximity to the Continent that fed into the growing body of Street work. I traveled there often, to Italy, Germany, France and other places where I could walk and find new stimuli and make new images.
